SOCIAL SECURITY will NEVER call you.
If you are due money from the stimulus package, it will go directly to your bank account or you will receive a check. Social Security has your information. NEVER give your social security number. Medicare number, bank, credit card or other personal info to anyone who calls asking for it.

Looking ahead to mid May and June, we have much to share. Our newsletter is jam packed this month.

Message from our Social Worker Elise

As we usher in the “merry, merry month of May” with all its glorious flowers and promising spring weather, we also want to remind you that May is officially designated as Older Americans Month.

Let’s step back for a few minutes to reflect on those elders in our lives who have inspired, encouraged and supported us, helping us be who we are today. Was it a Mother who nurtured, a Father who encouraged, an aunt or uncle who listened or perhaps a neighbor who showed kindness during a time of need?

We applaud our older SBS members who show up at the monthly gatherings, share their knowledge and stories of the Switzerland of old, and demonstrate how friendships are formed throughout life’s chapters. We cherish our members who allow our Social Worker into their homes and trust her with their most precious memories and concerns. And we honor those members who are caring for their older relatives and/or friends while navigating their own careers, child rearing and health issues.

There is an abundance of reasons to celebrate this month. Let’s make sure we remind ourselves of the power of caring and supporting one another. Happy May, 2026.

We know that Swiss hockey players are very successful playing for NHL teams.

When I visited the ballpark of the Atlanta Braves, I learned of a Swiss player who played professional baseball. Meet Otto Hees.

Born is 1878 in Bern, he emigrated with his parents to America in 1888. He enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in the Philippines from 1898 to 1900.

Otto Hees signed with Cleveland in the summer of 1902. During his time with Cleveland, he not only pitched, but also played the outfield. 1906 was his best season, going 20-17, including seven shutouts and league leading three saves.

At the end of the 1911 season the Boston Braves (now Atlanta Braves) acquired Hess with a late-career comeback culminating in a supporting role on the 1914 Miracle Braves.

Tech Support scam:

In this scenario, a scammer posing as a technical support representative calls to claim there is an issuer with your computer and asks for remote access to resolve the issue.

Once you provide this access, the scammer may request payment for technical assistance, install malicious software, change settings to leave your computer vulnerable, and/or steal your financial information.

To avoid this scam:

Update all security patches and antivirus software regularly
Don’t purchase any software or services from an unsolicited call or email.
Never give control of your computer to anyone who contacts you.
Don’t provide any of your personal financial information.

Romance scams:

Scammers use online dating sites and apps, social media, and chat rooms to create fake profiles and build relationships.After gaining trust, they request you to send money for a hardship, ask you to open an account or deposit checks on their behalf, or direct you to invest in cryptocurrency or other business opportunities.

Do not give your personal information, account numbers or credit card information to someone you recently met online.
Do not accept deposits into your account or send money to “help” anyone you have met online.
Be wary of anyone who quickly professes love, but won’t meet with you in person claiming that they are working overseas, or on an oil rig, etc.

Lottery / sweepstakes scam:

In this scenario scammers may contact you by phone, email or letter claiming you won and requiring you to pay a fee to receive the prize to avoid taxes or additional fees.

Be suspicious of anyone claiming you have won a lottery or sweepstakes that you did not enter.
Be leery of any lottery or sweepstakes requiring an upfront fee to collect winnings.

I’ve lived here for many, many years, and as much as I love NYC, I will always miss Switzerland. Being able to connect again with our Swiss community after all these years while working for the SBS has been very fulfilling.

Stay Alert! ATM scams
A few simple precautions can help you keep you and your finances safe when you use ATMs.

Be Aware

Pay attention to your surroundings, particularly at night. Consider having someone accompany you.

If you notice anything suspicious, consider leaving

Consider using another ATM or returning later.
If you notice anything suspicious while conducting your transaction, consider canceling the transaction and leaving the ATM.

Cover your hand

Cover your hand when entering your personal identification number (PIN). This way, if there are unauthorized devices attached to the ATM, they will not be able to record your PIN entry.

Do not display cash

Be discreet with your cash in the vicinity of the ATM. When your transaction has been completed, count the cash in the safety of your vehicle or home.

Report crime

Report any crime to local law enforcement officials and the operator of the ATM.

Spring seems to be just around the corner, giving us a glimpse with a few warm days, where we enjoyed spending time outside, without having to bundle up.

Stay Alert! Email scams
Scams are rampant and getting more sophisticated all the time. Below are some recommended guidelines to help navigate different types of situations. You can visit our resources page for more information.

Seasonal scams: You may start to receive fraudulent tax related emails during tax season. If you receive a threatening email that appears to come from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), do not click on it. The IRS will never make initial contact with a taxpayer by email or telephone. They will also never make threats of arrest to obtain payment of taxes.Mortgage closing costs scams: If you receive an email with new wire instructions for your closing costs, confirm the instructions with your attorney. Fraudsters may have stolen your information by hacking into the database of other entities involved in the transaction, such as title companies.

Fraudulent emails try to fool you into revealing personal information.

Here are some tips for protecting yourself from email scams:

Check the address and domain of all emails: If you notice the slightest discrepancy in the entity name or address, delete the email immediately, without clicking on any links or opening any attachments.Consider calling the sender: If you are unsure of the legitimacy of an email, contact the sender by telephone to confirm.Be cautious of unusual requests, even those that appear to come from a trusted source: Even if an email appears to come from a trusted source, never click on links or open attachments that you were not expecting. Never respond to emails asking you to change your password or to provide your personal information, including your credit card number.Keep your software up to date: Ensure that your computer’s operating system, your web browser, and your anti-virus software have the most recent updates.

In collaboration with the Swiss Society, the Swiss Consulate General will be hosting a special evening of Swiss cinema, featuring *Yvonne Eisenring’s* new film _Love Roulette_, followed by a conversation with the filmmaker herself.

Sometimes you have to grab opportunities when they present themselves. Last year, we learned about Seven Seals, a Swiss whisky company entering the U.S. market. We are now working with them and our sponsor The Lavaux to organize a joint event in the Spring.

Speaking of grabbing opportunities: cats tend to do that a lot.

Get Moving: Don't let cold weather stop you. Try marching in place while watching TV or listening to your favorite audiobook. Cross-tap — right hand to left knee, left hand to right knee — for an added challenge.
Eat Well: January brings wonderful winter produce like citrus fruits, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens. Pro tip: Substitute vegetables for other ingredients, like using spaghetti squash instead of pasta.
Keep Up With Preventive Care: Medicare covers many preventive and screening services at no cost to you. These include services like your yearly wellness visit, cancer screenings, the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program, and depression screenings.

Picture of the month

Our group had a great time seeing the New Jersey Devils beat the Nashville Predators in overtime 3-2. None other than Captain Nico Hischier scored the winning goal.We went on the ice after the game and to our delight, all three Swiss players joined us and mingled with us for a while!

Change is the only constant in life and often is a positive thing. We are working on ideas and projects to bring positive changes to you this year.

Change has also impacted our cat recently. We moved our plants around, and the perch which he frequently visits to look out the backyard, was different. Naturally, being the smart one that he is, he wasn't fazed by the change one bit.

This is a game just shortly before the NHL takes a break for the Winter Olympics.Spots on the High Five Tunnel and going on the ice after the game are just two of the special features.

Public transportation to Prudential Center from New York City is quite easy:

Take New Jersey Transit out of Penn Station to Newark Penn Station. From there it is an easy two blocks walk via Market Street and Mulberry Street.

You can also take the Path train from the World Trade Center to Newark Penn Station.
